Anytime you consider a career in the field of Information Technology or Computer Programming, it’s wise to realize that you’re going to need to update your skills periodically. Particularly in computer programming, it’s a good idea to learn new programming languages to make you more marketable and thus making you desirable to keep employed as new computer coding changes with advances in technology.
Some additional programming languages you should be familiar with:
- PHP – PHP is relatively new and an open-source HTML scripting language. It is used for web development that is imbedded in HTML pages. If you’re already employed and know programming languages, you know about PHP. If you’re using C or COBOL and not using PHP, it’s time to learn something new.
- C# – C# is a Microsoft programming language that evolved from C and C++. If you are using Microsoft or intend to use Microsoft, C# will be essential to know.
- AJAX – Experts don’t refer to AJAX as a programming language but it does use HTML or XHTML, XML and JavaScript for its interactive applications. Google Maps put the use of AJAX on just about everyone’s map. If you’re looking to find a niche for yourself, learning AJAX could be extremely helpful as experts suggest it is very hard to learn. There are plans in the works to introduce Atlas, which is supposed to make learning AJAX easier.
- Perl – Again, Perl is an open-source language that is used for CGI programs. Perl is very good at processing text and does well on a number of tasks.
Like just about any career, adding a few extra tools to your arsenal will be helpful in the retention of long-term employment. By adding a new programming language, or at least familiarizing yourself with new languages, career longevity will improve.
